Stafford, Robert T.

Robert T. Stafford, a Republican from Vermont, served in the U.S. House of Representatives at the beginning of the Nixon administration. In September 1971, during the period the White House tapes were being recorded, he resigned from the House to accept an appointment to the U.S. Senate, filling a vacancy. Stafford won a special election in January 1972 to retain his Senate seat and served there for the remainder of the Nixon presidency.
