Rockefeller, Nelson A.

During the Nixon taping period, Nelson A. Rockefeller served as the 49th Governor of New York, a position he held from January 1959 until December 1973. As a prominent leader of the moderate wing of the Republican Party, he undertook special assignments for President Nixon, including a presidential mission to Latin America in 1969. In May 1973, Nixon appointed him chairman of the National Commission on Water Quality. Rockefeller resigned his governorship to establish and lead the Commission on Critical Choices for Americans in 1973, a bipartisan group proposed by President Nixon.
