Walter R. Tkach was a U.S. Air Force Major General who served as the Physician to the President from January 1969 to September 1974. During the White House taping period (February 1971 – July 1973), Tkach was responsible for overseeing Richard Nixon's daily health, managing the White House medical staff, and traveling extensively with the President to coordinate medical contingencies on foreign and domestic trips. He notably treated Nixon for a severe bout of viral pneumonia in July 1973, right at the end of the taping era.
