Safire, William L.

William L. Safire served as a Special Assistant to the President and speechwriter from the beginning of the Nixon administration in January 1969 until his resignation in March 1973. Captured on the White House tapes between February 1971 and his departure, Safire frequently met with Nixon to craft key presidential addresses on the economy and the Vietnam War, and to discuss broader media strategy. He left the administration in March 1973 to become a political columnist for The New York Times, departing just before the Watergate scandal fully consumed the presidency.
