Garment, Leonard

Leonard Garment served as Special Consultant to the President from May 1969 to January 1974, advising Richard Nixon on civil rights, the arts, and minority issues. During the White House taping period, his responsibilities shifted dramatically when he was appointed Acting Counsel to the President in April 1973, replacing John Dean amidst the escalating Watergate scandal. He held this legal role until January 1974, when he transitioned to Assistant to the President, a position he maintained through the end of the Nixon administration in August 1974.
