J. Fred Buzhardt Jr. began the Nixon administration as Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Administration (February 1969 to June 1969) and Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Blue Ribbon Defense Panel (June 1969 to June 1970). During the majority of the White House taping period (February 1971 to July 1973), he served as General Counsel of the Department of Defense from August 1970 until May 1973, when he transitioned to the White House as Special White House Counsel for Watergate Matters to manage the president's escalating legal defense. In this role, he became the administration's primary legal authority on the newly revealed secret recordings, spending hundreds of hours reviewing the tapes before being elevated to White House Counsel in January 1974, a position he held until Nixon's resignation in August 1974.
