Kleindienst, Richard G.

Richard G. Kleindienst began his service in the Nixon administration as Deputy Attorney General in January 1969, a position he held until he was elevated to Attorney General in June 1972 after John Mitchell resigned to run Nixon's re-election campaign. During the White House taping period, Kleindienst oversaw the Justice Department's initial handling of the Watergate break-in and faced significant controversy regarding the administration's interference in an ITT antitrust settlement. As the Watergate scandal escalated and allegations of a cover-up consumed the administration, Kleindienst resigned his cabinet post in April 1973 on the same day as top White House aides H.R. Haldeman and John Ehrlichman.
